CO2, a burden and a blessing

Lately CO2 has become negatively labelled. This is mostly due to the
increasing awareness of the increasing greenhouse forcing with
subsequent global warming, caused by our use of fossil fuels for energy
production. Is this label deserved? CO2 is a very useful gas that is
being used in many industrial contexts and is a natural component in
the atmosphere.

After a general introduction covering general aspects, I will
concentrate on CO2 dispersed or dissolved in a liquid phase. What
processes are involved in movement of droplets/bubbles, and how are
they created? I will illustrate by using some familiar, and some less
known, examples. For instance, why the champagne glasses are long and
thin, and the catastrophe at Lake Nyos in Africa.

The lecture will be given in English or Norwegian, depending on the
audience.
